The Dress

Before you shop for your wedding dress, do some homework. Scour through magazines, and check the internet to see what is current. Many designers have websites to show their current lines, and gives information about where they can be purchased. Give yourself plenty of time,so you can have fun trying on as many dresses as you would like. Finding a dress you like in a magazine or on line is one thing, looking good in that dress is another. Make appointments with a number of bridal salons and be prepared to tell the salesperson what type of dress you are looking for, such as elegant, princess-like, sophisticated,or trendy. Don’t discount your salespersons recommendations, they are usually experts and can assess your body type rather quickly. Be open to their suggestions, but after trying on a number of dresses most brides “just know” when they have tried on the right dress.

Types of Bouquets

When choosing your bridal bouquet keep your body shape and size along with your wedding gown in mind. The bouquet should not overpower you, nor should it be so small that it is lost. An elegant gown should pair up with an impressive bouquet, but a simple gown can also provide a nice background for an elaborate bouquet. Here are a few examples of bouquet styles:

  • Constructed bouquet: clusters of flowers are taped or wired together to create a structured form. The stems can be wrapped in ribbon or the arrangement can be put into a small bouquet holder called a tussy mussie(a Victorian era bouquet holder usually made of silver).
  • Nosegay: a tight, small round, bouquet usually made of one type of flower.
  • Hand-tied: flowers have a “just-picked” looked, where the stems are tied with a bow and some of the stems are left exposed.
  • Cascade: flowers and greenery trail downward from the main body of the bouquet.
  • Pomander: a small sphere is covered with flowers and suspended from a ribbon handle.
  • Boutonnières: small flowers or greens worn in the left lapel by the groom, groomsmen, fathers, grandfathers and godfathers.

Brides can add there own personal touches to their bouquets by using lace or ribbon from their mother’s or grandmother’s gown, or using antique pins on the ribbons used to secure flower stems. Sometimes brides duplicate the bouquets of their mothers, others may carry small bibles with flowers attached. Make your bouquet as personal or as different as you dare!

Flowers

Flowers, flowers, everywhere-that should be your mantra. What other occasion, affair, party, has the quantity and variety of flowers but at a wedding? They set the mood, express religious customs, and transform a space with their colors, shapes, and scents. They can change a plain hall into a wonderland, an aisle into a garden, a home into a castle, and just make everything look special. Selecting seasonal flowers adds appropriate style besides being cost effective. Flower availability can vary from region to region , so check with your florist to see what will be in season for your wedding as well as year round flower choices. Brides don’t just have to use traditional flowers. New hybrids are always popping up. Berries and flowering greenery as well as potted plants and fresh produce(apples, lemons, pears, pineapples) can be turned into beautiful, unexpected arrangements.
